Kite boarding or kite surfing is a sport where a person (a "kiter") controls a kite and thus uses the wind as propulsion. The kite is attached to a trapezoid that sits around the hips, and it is guided by means of four lines that are attached to a bar.
The most common competition disciplines on water are Freestyle, Wykestyle and Wave riding. Racing and acrobatics are most common on snow. The world championship in long-distance snow kiting has been held annually since 2009 in Varanger. Kiting became an Olympic sport in 2016.
