A skateboard is a narrow board mounted on four wheels. Many people use it as a form of transport as well as a leisure time activity. When riding a skateboard the rider stands slightly askew and uses his or her body weight and leans to the left or right to change direction.
Initially the rider has one foot on the board and kicks off with the other until enough speed is achieved. A good sense of balance and good co-ordination are both essential in skateboarding. There are many competitions arranged in the sport. The two main activities in competitive skateboarding are vert skateboarding and street skateboarding. Vert skateboarding involves high jumps are ramps and performing a number or series of tricks. Street skateboarding is done in urban street areas or at skateboard parks, where the rider uses a variety of objects and barriers to perform tricks such as sliding down handrails or jumping down steps and similar.
