A Volunteer Centre is a venue for all those who wish to volunteer for activities in their local community. The centre functions as a meeting place for the public authorities, various organisations and associations and people who work in and support these. Volunteer Centres are supported by the State and local municipalities and are not membership-based.
There are more than 400 volunteer centres in Norway. The work of volunteer centres is aimed at all in the local community, whether these be individuals who wish to participate in voluntary, meaningful work or would like to receive help and assistance. People of all ages can find something of use and enjoyment through the work of the local centres. There is a multiplicity of activities that vary in accordance with local premises and needs. Some examples include social meeting places, help to those who live alone, someone to talk to, help, or just to provide company when visiting a hospital, walking or hiking groups, various activities and assistance for and with non-Norwegian speakers. You can find your local centre at www.frivilligsentral.no, which also includes an overview of activities near where you live.
