Litt om Folkedans

Leikarring and Dansarring are associations involved with folk dancing, a term that applies to all types of dances belonging to specific folk cultures. This is an important part of both rural associations and farm youth associations, and folk music organisations offer courses in folk dancing. The goal of the Leikarringer is to carry forward and rejuvenate folk dancing traditions that have historical roots going back hundreds of years.

Folk dancing originated in local cultural communities, where dancing was used for ceremonial purposes, or for celebrations and recreation. Folk dancing also refers to national dances or ethnic dances. Folk dancing is a physical activity with an artistic expression, and is a tradition with a social function. If you join a dance group, you can go on trips, and participate in festivals and events where you can meet other dance groups. You can also compete in folk dancing, at a so-called «kappleik», which is a type of tournament for different folk music and folk dancing groups.
