Track & field encompasses various running, jumping and throwing sports. The venue is an arena with a 400 metre running track and a grass-covered field. Some sports also have indoor alternatives.
Competitors in running sports start simultaneously and the first past the finish line is the winner. There are many running sports, the best known being sprint, relay and hurdles. The sprint requires the runner to run as fast as possible over a relatively short distance, while a relay race is a team race with several runners exchanging a baton with other team members in a series of runs to the finish line. Hurdles require the runner to run at top speed while jumping a series of equidistant hurdles on the track. Track & field offers many highly entertaining exercises such as the long and high jumps, javelin, discus, shot put, hammer, pole vault, race walking and hop, skip and jump.
